教师介绍:
朱军:男,美国阿肯色大学生物与农业工程系终身教授、美国农业和生物工程师学会会员、美国土木工程师学会相关会员、美国科学发展学会会员、美国农业和生物工程师学会专业工程师。主要研究领域包括生物系统工程、生物反应器、动物粪便和有机污水的物理/化学处理方法、环境除臭方法的开发及应用、生物资源再利用、生物能源生产、生物制氢过程的研究和开发环境微生物学及生物化学、环境工程等。先后主持来自美国农业部、明州农业及环境署及各种农业生产者协会(如养猪协会、玉米和大豆协会等)的科研课题多项。近年来累计获得的科研经费超过310万美元,发表论文100多篇。文章总他引次数近千次(平均每篇10次),同时还有在学术及各种专业会议上发表的大会论文117篇。网页链接:

课程介绍:
Sustainability may not be a tangible concept to many people even today; however, the deterioration of environment and the depletion of natural resources have drawn increasing attention and prominence since late 20th century. The uncontrolled global population growth as well as the inequality of wealth distribution has increased pressure on air, water, arable land, and raw materials. This course will present the basic concept of sustainability and discuss the contemporary issues we are facing today in the areas of energy and other natural resources. Process and methodologies associated with measuring, assessing, and designing sustainable systems in water, energy and food will be discussed in detail, with emphasis on using life cycle assessment (LCA) for inventory and impact analyses. Also included in discussion are macroethics, green materials, biodiversity index calculation, and release of hazardous materials to the environment associated with the LCA process. Students will learn application of the LCA methods through in-class exercises and projects. Since agriculture is the industry that occupies the largest land area among all industries and consumes 70% of the world fresh water supply every year, how to evaluate the role that agriculture plays in the overarching goal of maintaining worldwide sustainability will also be discussed at length in this course.
